Wildlife in South Australia

Animals everywhere!

There are 100 islands, millions of square kilometres of wilderness and over 3000 kilometres of coastline; it’s no wonder South Australia is full of wildlife! You don’t have to travel far from civilization to see famous Australian native animals.

There are koalas and kangaroos in the Adelaide Hills, just 20 minutes drive from the centre of Adelaide. In Port Adelaide and Glenelg, both suburbs of Adelaide, you can kayak or swim with wild dolphins.

Drive an hour south to Victor Harbor between May and October and you have a chance of seeing migrating whales. Sometimes they’re so close you can watch them from the shore as they “breach” and “spy-hop”.

Go north into the outback for desert animals. See big wedge-tailed eagles, emus, lizards and rare yellow-footed rock wallabies. The ancient red ranges of the Flinders Ranges are a spectacular natural refuge for wildlife.

Make a short crossing to beautiful Kangaroo Island. This gorgeous natural island; a place of cliffs, beaches, bushland and rolling pastures, is perhaps the best place in Australia to see native Australian animals in the wild. See koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and duck-billed platypus. There are sea lions (you can walk among them on Seal Bay), dolphins and fur seals and an incredible variety of birds.

South Australia is an ideal destination for bird-watchers; home to a number of rare species. In summer, the wetlands of the Coorong National Park, a huge strip of towering sand dunes, with salt water on one side and fresh water on the other, are visited by a quarter of Australia’s wading birds.

For amazing marine life you must visit Eyre Peninsula. Swim with dolphins, sea lions and tuna. Cage-dive with great white sharks.

If you’re on a tight schedule, don’t worry, Cleland Wildlife Park is close to Adelaide city. It’s in the Adelaide Hills and has an amazing collection of Australian native animals; it’s also where you can have your photograph taken holding a koala.
