Zoos and Wildlife

A world of wildlife

From native Australian animals to giant pandas, South Australia is home to wildlife from all around the world. You’ll find zoos and wildlife parks near Adelaide city and in regional areas.

Cleland Wildlife Park

Cleland Wildlife Park is located in the Adelaide Hills, only 20 minutes from the city. Cleland has 35 hectares of bushland habitat, where you can wander amongst Australian wildlife. The animals are used to visitors, so you can feed and pat them.

Adelaide Zoo

Adelaide Zoo is home to 1,800 animals. Don’t miss Wang Wang and Funi, Adelaide’s two giant pandas. They are the only giant pandas in the southern hemisphere. To avoid the queues, book a panda viewing time online before you arrive. For something special, go on a behind the scenes tour and learn more about the pandas.

Monarto Zoo

Head to Monarto Zoo for a safari experience. Monarto is a 1,000 hectare open range zoo and is home to animals from all over the world. Stroll around the park on the walking trails or take the Zu-Loop Shuttle. See lions, cheetahs, elephants and more. Rare animals include black rhinoceros, Prezwelki’s horse, addax and African painted dogs. The zoo offers behind the scenes tours, where small groups can get up close to the animals.

Wildlife parks

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Adelaide Hills. It has a range of Australian wildlife, including the elusive platypus. See the animals emerge from sleep on a nocturnal sunset walk. Enjoy lunch or dinner at the Bilby Café.

See more Australian animals and birds at Gorge Wildlife Park. Located in Cudlee Creek, the park is about a 45 minute drive from Adelaide. See wombats, dingoes, kangaroos and koalas, along with monkeys, alligators, meerkat and ostriches.

Urimbirra Wildlife Park is home to Australian wildlife, including freshwater and saltwater crocodiles, snakes, lizards and wedge-tailed eagles.

When you visit Victor Harbor, take a penguin tour at the Granite Island Recreation and Nature Park. Watch the little penguins make their way to the burrows at dusk, after a day’s fishing. Learn more about the penguins at the island’s Penguin, Marine and Environmental Centre.
